Preparing for Your Tan
How should I prepare my skin for the best spray tan results?
For the best results, shave, shower, and exfoliate your skin the night before your appointment. Avoid using any oils, moisturizers, deodorant, and perfumes after you shower and on the day of your, as they can create a barrier on your skin that prevents the spray tan from fully absorbing.
Can I shower before my spray tan?
It’s best to avoid showering immediately before your appointment. Your skin will remain too hydrated and will not provide you with the best results. Showering a minimum of 4 hours before your session is acceptable if you must shower the day of your appointment, but be sure your skin is clean, dry, and free from any products for optimal results.
Are there any products I should avoid wearing or using the day of my tan?
Yes, avoid deodorant, makeup, perfume, and moisturizers, as these can create uneven results or discoloration.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear loose-fitting, dark-colored clothing to your appointment. Avoid tight clothing or undergarments that may rub against your skin and cause streaking.
What should I do with my hair for my spray tan?
Tie your hair back or secure it away from your face and neck. We provide disposable hair caps to protect your hair during the session.
What if I have very dry skin?
Dry skin can affect how evenly your spray tan applies and how long it lasts. We recommend moisturizing regularly in the days leading up to your appointment (avoiding oils) and exfoliating thoroughly the night before. Avoid using moisturizer on the day of your tan to ensure optimal results.
What should I do if I have a sunburn or peeling skin?
If you have a sunburn or peeling skin, it’s best to wait until your skin has fully healed before scheduling a spray tan. Peeling skin can result in uneven application and fading, which may affect your results. If you are experiencing any irritation or abnormality with your skin prior to your appointment, please call us to reschedule.
Can I get a spray tan over an existing fake tan?
No, you should not get a spray tan over an existing fake tan. It’s best to exfoliate thoroughly and allow the existing tan to fade before booking your next spray tan to ensure even application and optimal results.
Can I go to the gym before my appointment?
Avoid working out right before your spray tan, as sweat can create barriers and interfere with the tan’s application. Arrive cool and dry for the best results.
After Your Appointment
What should I do immediately after my spray tan?
After your session, wear loose, dark clothing to avoid smudging your tan and refrain from wearing a bra or tight-fitting items until after your first rinse. Avoid any activities that could cause sweating, such as working out or spending time outdoors in hot weather. Keep your skin dry and avoid getting wet from swimming, showering, or other activities. Also, be sure to keep pets from licking or jumping on your skin, as this can disrupt the developing tan.
When should I rinse off after my spray tan?
Your technician will provide you with a specific timeframe, usually between 2-4 hours after your appointment, to rinse off with water only. It is very important to follow this timeframe for optimal results, as rinsing too early or too late can affect the final color of your tan. Use lukewarm water and rinse thoroughly, including behind your ears and the back of your legs, to remove the bronzer. Avoid scrubbing, using soap, or rubbing your skin with a washcloth during this rinse.
What should I expect during the first rinse?
During your first rinse, you may notice some color washing off—this is just the cosmetic bronzer and is completely normal. The actual tan will continue to develop over the next 8 hours. After rinsing, you may feel like your color has disappeared, but don’t worry—your tan will appear as it develops fully.
Can I use soap or other products during the first rinse?
No, only rinse with water during your initial rinse. Avoid using soap, loofahs, or any products on your skin until your first full shower the following day. This helps the tan set evenly and ensures the best results.
When can I take a regular shower?
You can take a regular shower the day after your appointment. At this time, you can use gentle, tan-safe body wash products and pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.
What should I do after my first regular shower?
After your first shower, apply a tan-safe body lotion or body butter generously to keep your skin hydrated and extend the life of your tan. Moisturizing twice daily is recommended for optimal results. Avoid products with harsh chemicals, oils, or exfoliating agents that can strip your tan.
Will the spray tan stain my clothing or bedding?
The initial bronzer may transfer to clothing or bedding, but it should wash out of most fabrics. To minimize transfer, wear loose, dark-colored clothing after your appointment and consider using dark-colored bedding until your first shower.
Can I use sunscreen after my spray tan?
Yes! Protecting your skin from UV rays is important, even with a spray tan. Use a sunscreen that’s free of oils or heavy moisturizers to maintain your tan.
During Your Appointment
What happens when I arrive for my appointment?
When you arrive, your technician will greet you and guide you through a quick consultation. This is your opportunity to share your desired level of color, any specific needs, or concerns you might have. We’ll answer any questions and customize the tanning solution to match your skin tone and preferences.
Can I tan topless or nude?
Yes, you can tan topless or nude if that’s what you’re comfortable with. We want you to feel at ease during your session, and there’s no pressure to wear anything you don’t want to. For those who prefer coverage, you can wear your undergarments, swimsuits, or disposable items we provide. Keep in mind that anything you wear during the session will leave tan lines and be exposed to the tanning solution.
Do I need to wear anything specific during my spray tan?
You can dress to your comfort level during the spray tan. Many clients choose to wear dark, disposable undergarments, swimsuits, or even go without clothing to avoid tan lines. We also provide disposable items upon request.
Will anyone else be in the room during my appointment?
Spray tanning sessions are private, with only you and your technician present. This ensures your comfort and allows for a focused, professional application.
What is the spray tanning process like?
Once you’re ready, the technician will guide you to the tanning area and step out of the room to allow you to undress to your level of comfort. When the technician returns, they will provide you with a lotion to act as a barrier on areas prone to over-developing, such as your hands, elbows, and heels. They’ll give you clear directions on how and where to apply it.
Next, the technician will use a spray gun or airbrush system to apply the tanning solution evenly across your body. During the process, they will ask you to adjust your positioning or posture slightly to ensure even coverage. The tanning solution will be applied to each area of the body twice. The application process is quick, typically taking about 10-15 minutes.
After the tan is applied, the technician will use alcohol pads to remove any excess tanning solution from your palms, fingernails, toenails, and the arches of your feet. They will then apply a light drying powder to help set the tan and reduce any sticky feeling. Finally, you’ll stand in front of a fan to allow the tan to dry before getting dressed in loose, dark clothing.
Do I need to wear protective items during the session?
For your safety and comfort, we provide optional protective items such as nose filters and disposable thongs. Let your technician know if you’d like to use any of these items.
Will the tanning solution feel sticky or uncomfortable?
The tanning solution may feel slightly tacky immediately after application, but this sensation usually fades as the solution dries. Standing in front of the fan post-application helps reduce this feeling quickly.
How long does the entire appointment take?
Your appointment will typically last about 20-30 minutes from start to finish. This includes the consultation, application, drying time, and any questions you may have for your technician.
What if I’m new to spray tanning and feel unsure about the process?
If this is your first time, our technicians are here to guide you through every step. We’ll explain the process in detail, address any concerns, and ensure you’re comfortable throughout your session. First-time nerves are completely normal, and we’ll do everything we can to make it a positive experience.
What if I have mobility issues or difficulty standing?
We strive to accommodate all clients. If you have any mobility concerns or need assistance during your appointment, please let us know in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements to ensure your comfort.
Can I talk to my technician during the session?
Absolutely! If you have any questions, need adjustments, or just want to chat, feel free to talk to your technician. Communication is key to making your experience as comfortable as possible.
Do I need to worry about streaks or uneven application?
Our technicians are trained to ensure an even, streak-free application. During the session, they’ll guide you on how to stand or position yourself to ensure full coverage, even in tricky areas like elbows, knees, and hands.
What if I feel nervous or uncomfortable during the appointment?
Your comfort is our top priority. If you feel uneasy at any point, let your technician know. We’re here to help, and we want to ensure you have the best possible experience.
